Food with a Heart – Inspiration for Our Dishes
What sets SupperWorks apart is that our meals aren’t stock recipes from a cookbook or online, but rather a reflection of owner Joni’s love of food. Through her travels, she’s picked up recipes from around the world, which she brings back and adapts for SupperWorks customers. Today, she shares the background of how some of SupperWorks’ best selling main dishes came to be.
Porcupine Meatballs – Originally a recipe from Joni’s high school home economics class, this popular dish went through a number of revisions before it was a staple in our rotation. Since its debut, our Porcupine Meatballs have become an all-time favourite (and are featured in next month’s menu!).
The Raj’s Favourite Beef Curry – This is SupperWorks’ twist on Kheema, an Indian ground beef recipe. Joni has enjoyed variations of this meal in many different households and recreated the recipe by trial-and-error until she got just the perfect blend of spices.
Pan-Seared Basa with Tomato-Cream Sauce – Seychelles is a sunny paradise, way out in the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar. Joni brought this recipe back to Canada after visiting so SupperWorks customers could enjoy the African & Indian flavours of Seychellois cuisine without the long journey.
25th Anniversary Pasta with Prosciutto – On her silver wedding anniversary trip to Sicily, Joni fell in love with the gorgeous simplicity of the prosciutto pasta she tasted. It’s one of her favourite recipes and the SupperWorks version is an ode to that magical trip.
Old World Beef & Mushroom Goulash – Joni describes visiting Old Prague like stepping back in time. She loved the earthy flavours in their food—especially the use of caraway seeds—and couldn’t wait to create a dish that used this under-used spice in Canada.
Ratatouille Provencal – This has been a staple SupperWorks recipe from the beginning. While the original received high praise, after Joni visited southern France, she reworked the dish to its current incarnation.
Joni’s love of food is evident in the recipes that she creates for each month’s menu. Every one of our main dishes has a story behind it and we hope that when you enjoy our food, you’ll create a new story with your family.
